This blog has been going on for 3 years and some of you have been following my posts for some time. Those of you who do, have noticed that I haven't been blogging for a while. There have been a lot of changes in my life in the past year or so, which make it impossible to dedicate myself to internet researching and blogging. This means that I will not go on with this blog. Instead, what I plan to do is to open an internet site, where you can follow my work or maybe buy some of it. Hope to count on your visits!

I've always loved dolls, especially art dolls and miniature dolls in all kinds of materials. But I was never the kind of girl, who likes plush toys.

So I've only recently discovered the passion for soft toys and this happened, I think, because so many wonderful artists are now using the soft toy as an artistic object.

This tendency has grown very much in the last couple of years and I've been making a list of favourites, which I'd like to share with you here. It's very difficult to know where to start, but here are a few great ones.

Of course you know the work of Lizette Greco. My favourites are the animals and the cars.

"History of a Portuguese Industry

XIX Century

1887 - Foundation

The first ever Portuguese factory of soaps and perfums was founded in Oporto by Ferdinand Claus and Georges Ph. Schweder, two Germans living in Portugal. By that time, this sort of products were imported and considered a privilege of the wealthiest classes, since the large majority of the Portuguese population didn’t have neither conditions nor hygiene care. The company’s brand was F.P.C. – the initials from “Fábrica de Produtos Chimicos CLAUS & SCHWEDER, SUCRS” – and the products were given foreign names, in order to make them more attractive to the Portuguese population.

XX Century

1903 – Expansion
Schweder (who was forced to leave due to health problems) was replaced by Achilles Alves de Brito as the company’s manager, while Willy Thessen – a graduated perfumery chemist – became responsible for the Technical Department. The business grew under the new owners, as soap was becoming more and more popular.

1918 – The birth of Ach. Brito
The Germany entrance on the World War I, forced the escape of the two German partners and the closing of Claus & Schweder. Achilles de Brito, the Portuguese partner, along with his brother Afonso, created a new company who occupies the space of F.C.P., the ACH. BRITO & CO. Lda. Later they had buy the broke mass of Claus & Schweder. However, Achilles de Brito decided to maintain the Claus Porto brand and, for years, both brands coexisted as umbrella brands, covering a set of product brands. The new company became known for its quality and innovation, particularly as far as the packaging was concerned.

1940/50 – National market leadership
Ach. Brito went on to conquering leadership of the domestic market. The company produced for the internal market, especially for the Portuguese colonies, and exported to England and United States of America. From early on, one of Ach. Brito’s main concerns was to have faithful costumers, which led to large investments in the aroma, texture and price of its products. In 1953, the company even created its own lithography, where labels were hand-painted. In the eighties, however, the loss of the African colonies, the fierce competition of multinationals, as well as modern distribution took its toll on the business, which went through a series of hardships.

The 90’s – Bathroom Chiq
Ach. Brito was able to keep up with the changes of an increasingly agressive and competive market, while adapting to the consumer’s needs evolution. Currently, it is present in hipermarket and supermarket chains, cash & carries, as well as the traditional commerce (including the pharmacy channel).
In 1994, together with the American company Lafco, Ach. Brito started developing a line of gift products, which have been commercialized with increasing success in the United States of America, Canada and England, under the Claus Porto brand. The partnership with the american company Lafco in the 90’s, when the company was experiencing difficulties in surpassing the competition of multinationals and hypermarkets, gave the company a new life.
Claus Porto is used to brand the high-quality products aimed at the foreign market, while the institutional brand Ach. Brito is used to bond the mass market brands commercialized in the domestic market. Claus Porto develops high-quality products, produced in an old fashioned way, almost entirely by hand.
Rather then simply offering soaps or hygiene products, Claus Porto creates true works of art, whose exclusive Art Déco design and packaging evoke the company’s historical legacy, unquestionably its major strength.
At the beginning of 2007 the company made a new bet, moved to modern facilities with a covered area of 3.900m2 implanted in a private field of 10.000m2.
The company’s following challenge is to impart vigour to Ach.Brito so that it becomes a feasible alternative to the brands that dominate the national mass market."

A pensar em todos os que me têm perguntado se dou workshops de técnicas de feltro, decidi, finalmente, arrancar com o primeiro. Terá lugar no Sábado, dia 11 de Outubro, às 14 horas e a duração será de 3 a 4 horas.

WORKSHOP DE FELTRAGEM COM ÁGUA E SABÃO – NÍVEL 1 – AS TRÊS FORMAS DE BASE NA FELTRAGEM (PLACA, BOLA, ROLINHO) E COMO TIRAR PARTIDO DELAS – 3 a 4h

O workshop destina-se a participantes que ainda não tenham tido qualquer contacto com o processo de feltragem com água e sabão.

Não há receitas certas ou erradas para a feltragem. Partindo dos 5 elementos fundamentais (água, calor, movimento, sabão e lã) para produzir feltro, o limite é apenas a fantasia de cada um. Assim, o que se pretende neste workshop é dar aos participantes os conhecimentos de base, necessários ao desenvolvimento de um “estilo próprio”.

Cada participante deverá ainda trazer consigo:
· Agulha e dedal
· Linhas
· Boa tesoura e avental

Cada participante leva do workshop 4 peças
· Placa de feltro decorada para fazer pequena bolsa
· Bola “chocalho” decorada
· Elástico para cabelo “rasta”
· Anel / pregadeira em forma de flor (tudo cosido)

Here is a treasure I discovered, while going through an italian magazine.

Mustardseed & Moonshine was founded by Kate Carlyle in Cape Town, South Africa in 1992 to celebrate her love of the botanical form. The idea was to make beautiful ceramic flowers that were both usable and lasting, flowers that were meticulously crafted, and yet simultaneously robust and functional.

Delicious!!! Especially if you - like me - are a flower fan.

To all of you, who have been expecting to see new posts in the last couple of weeks ... sorry...

I've been going through materials and old sketches and making lots of samples. To sum it up, I've been preparing the new work you'll be seeing here and on etsy starting from September.

And the thing is, that when I'm in this process I just can't thing about anything else. I'm totally absorbed the whole day long. So, you'll have to forgive me ... it's definitely for a good cause.

Before I completely dive into my work, I'll be taking a couple of weeks off, which means I will not be able to send you any purchased items from etsy or daWanda. So, if you're planning to buy something from my shops, it'll have to be after the 5th September. Thank you!

Nevertheless, and since I can never really be totally apart from my work during vacation, I plan on publishing a few posts in the next couple of weeks. And I promise I'll bring you interesting stuff.

"On felt and sculpture

I use felt sculpturally because of its plastic and historic ties to the body. Equally intriguing to me are its metaphorical similarities and connections to skin. Felt has always provided insulation from the natural elements. Nomads used it for warmth and shelter - it can be seen in Mongolian yurts and elegant, shaped cloaks from the Middle East.

Modern felt has also taken on industrial roles including its use to absorb sound (as in the felt pads on saxophone and piano keys) as well as a filter for air, water and chemicals.

Creating handmade felt is a highly percussive process, one in which many repetitive actions serve to compact the fibers. Either soap or an acid base is necessary, altering the Ph value of the hairs to make them to bond.

All these factors cause me to see the fibers I make more sculpturally, and to place them in fresh contexts with both human and metaphorical resonance."

"In the mid 1980’s as an artist using basket techniques to express ideas I felt free to use any material available, no matter where it came from. But, as I learnt more about the tradition and craft of basket making it became obvious to me that basket makers have always been environmental conservationists; using only the materials of their immediate environment and never more than could be considered sustainable. This realisation combined with a life-long interest in resourcefulness and a growing conviction that sustainability was a valid cause made me decide in 1992 to stop using materials that could not be considered sustainable. Rattan from South East Asia, chemical dyes and applied paints and varnishes were some of the things that were consequently eliminated from my work. Now I work only with grown, found or recycled materials that are available in my immediate environment and sustainable living and working has become a guiding principle in my life."

"Most of the materials used for manufacturing consumer products and their packaging still have many years of life left in them when they are buried in landfill sites. It is this, often colourful, everyday waste that has inspired much of my work. These materials which already have their own history, present me as a designer, with the challenge of turning them into something new which will intrigue, amuse or otherwise stimulate the viewer or user."

Artists of recycling

I'd like to introduce a new category today - the artists of recycling. It takes a lot of fantasy to make beautiful and useful objects out of what other people throw away.

This weekend I met Patrícia Martins, a portuguese artist who had a great idea to reuse plastic containers. I became a "double fan" of her work because I'd been collecting that sort of container for a year, hoping I'd get a good idea of what to do with them. But, since nothing interesting came to me, I decided to throw them all away a couple of months ago, because I already had too much to pack! Patrícia though found a great use for them!

By the way, in case you're interested, Patrícia is always looking for plastic containers for her projects.

Back to felt

Even during all the packing, unpacking, moving ... I haven't stopped working. I kept very busy with my new crochet pieces, but we'll come back to that some other time, because I do want to show you some of my new work.

Anyone who's used to felting knows, that you need room and time and so I haven't been felting for ages! And I really miss it! So I'm in a "felty" mood and just had to bring you a couple of felt artists today.

Susanne Wetzel's work is absolutely unique. She's been felting her dolls for years now and her experience makes them perfect. If you've ever tried felting a big object, you'll know how difficult it is to make it really compact inside, so that when you wash it, it won't shrink. Well, Susanne garanties, that the viecheria dolls can be washed in the washmachine (30º) without shrinking. Now that's quality!
I love what she says about her dolls, that "sie freundlich, aber niemals niedlich und süß sind", which means, that they're friendly but never cute and sweet. That's definitely true and I think it's what makes them special.

Apparently diamonds aren't a girl's best friend anymore! A piece of jewelry can be absolutely stunning, even if it's made of something like paper! And to prove it here's Ana Hagopian.

Pressed paper is the medium favoured by Ana Hagopian from Barcelona. Ana's vibrant necklaces are crafted from a mixture of pressed paper and brightly coloured gauze in striking colours of lime green or fire engine red, and resemble water lilies floating on a pond. Ana says, "Since I was a little kid I liked to cut all types of materials with my favourite red scissors, and to play in the forest taking home all kind of leaves, seeds and stones as treasures. To me jewelry has to be unique! Then it can either be elegant and minimalist or colorful and have a sense of humor.

These are the qualities I cherish and the ones that drive me to spend a small fortune on one of these pieces. And then it doesn't matter what they are made of: from paper to silver, from polymer clay to felt, from plastic to crochet. And I could go on and on ...

So, I plan on bringing you some of the wonderful examples of my dream jewelry.

For the past 4 years I've been living at the seaside. Now I'm about to move to Lisbon, something I'm very excited about. Yet, I'm sure I'll miss this place. No wonder, it's probably one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe.

So, because I'm feeling a bit nostalgic already, today I bring you a wonderful artist, with whom I feel I have two things in common - the love for crochet and the love for the sea!

Gooseflesh is from Australia. At her blog you'll find these and so many other wonders!

I never intended to make this a blog about my personal opinions or to talk about my life and beliefs in any way. It´s always been a place to post about my work and the work of others.
But, this is something I just couldn't leave unmentioned, because it concerns the country where I was born and because it touches me profoundly.

The Miss Landmine photo exhibition is openning in Luanda (Angola) today, the 4th April, the UN International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

"Every now and then an idea comes along that serves a genuinely valuable human rights purpose and subverts stereotypes at the same time. Such is the case with the Miss Landmine competition, a controversial contest for women who have been disabled or disfigured by landmines. The purpose: to empower women and challenge concepts of physical perfection while raising global and local awareness of landmines. A couple of days ago I saw a discussion on internet about wether or not crochet is oldfashioned. Well, I'd say it's as oldfashioned as jewelry or felt. What I mean is it's an old technique, but every technique is as good as you make it. And people have made everything you can imagine with crochet. So this made me feel like exploring the work of talented crochet artists here.

It's very difficult to decide were to start though. But, there is an artist I love, who might be the right one to start with. I admire her artistic atitute and sense of humour. Patricia Waller was born in Chile, but she studied in Germany, Belgium, in the USA and France. She curently lives and works in Germany.

"Wool is often classified as inferior in terms of art and art history. It is not a material of which major works of art are made. We women artists who work with it, reflect our status in art, culture, and society, from this material and method that one can call genuinely feminine. The irony or the humour contained in the work are most definitely intentional. It is important to me to let the beholder access the work. I consider causing a laugh or a smile as a positive and legitimate means of approach. This of course does not mean that I do not take my work very seriously." Patricia Waller

Já que também este facto terá influência sobre o meu trabalho, gostaria ainda de assinalar que a partir de início de Maio deste ano estarei a viver em Lisboa.

Com a Primavera à porta, a organização da "Crafts & Design" traz-nos mais uma excelente iniciativa.

"Germinar" é o tema da 19.ª edição da "Crafts & Design" no Jardim da Estrela, dia 2 de Março, das 9h00 às 18h00h.

Cada participante (nós!) deverá produzir uma flor com uma função decorativa, que fará parte de um jardim criado por todos!

Cada flor será vendida a 6€, quantia que se traduz na compra de 3 árvores. Quanto mais flores vendermos, mais árvores plantamos. O objectivo é a reflorestação de áreas ardidas, reabilitação de áreas degradadas, valorização de matas, florestas e parques, entre outras acções do projecto ProNatura.

A "Crafts & Design" no Jardim da Estrela associa-se à ANEFA – Associação de Empresas Florestais e do Ambiente (http://www.anefa.pt/) e serão aceites, para venda, flores do público em geral. Para tal, devem ser entregues, junto da organização, até às 13h00.

Vamos coloborar!!!

Because Spring's coming the "Crafts & Design" team is working on another wonderful idea.

"Germinar" (to germinate, to sprout) will be the motto for the 19th edition of "Crafts & Design", taking place on the 2nd March from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

We'll all bring a handmade flower (of all sorts of materials!), which will be added to a handmade garden!

Each of them will be sold for 6€, which is enough to buy 3 trees. The more flowers we sell, the more trees we'll be able to plant. The big goal is to reforest burnt areas.

"Crafts & Design" will be organising this in association with ANEFA – Associação de Empresas Florestais e do Ambiente (http://www.anefa.pt/). If you also wish to take part in this iniciative, bring your flower to the organisation on the morning of the 2nd March.

Como o prometido é devido, aqui estão as primeiras novidades.

Para começar, acabo de actualizar a minha loja online.

A partir de agora poderá encontrar promoções que se estenderão dos materiais para feltragem e bijuteria, às peças acabadas. Neste momento, e até dia 22 de Fevereiro, poderá adquirir complementos para bijuteria, e flores e malas em feltro feitas à mão no Nepal a preços mais baixos.

Se já é cliente há algum tempo, notará que baixaram os preços de produtos como os kits de feltragem, as agulhas e o elástico de rolinho.

E, para quem está interessado em avançar nestas técnicas, temos artigos novos como os diversos tipos de caracóis (para cabelos de bonecos ou para aplicar na própria peça a feltrar), o sabão de azeite em flocos (mais fácil de derreter na água), a seda penteada (para decorar as peças a feltrar) e o látex (para tornar as superfícies anti-derrapantes).

Uma outra novidade são os links (em inglês e português) com as mais diversas instruções de feltragem (com agulha e com água e sabão).

Gostava de saber como se feltra sobre a seda (o chamado "nuno felt")? Então, não perca os vídeos da artista brasileira Denise Meneghello (português) e de uma artista americana (inglês), da qual não consegui apanhar o nome (sorry!).

É sempre com satisfação que tenho conhecimento de novos espaços para expor e vender peças artesanais e de design. Desta vez na zona de Braço de Prata (Lisboa). Aqui fica a informação:

"A Eterno Retorno e a Ler Devagar, criaram um espaço único em Lisboa. A inauguração foi no passado dia 14 de Junho na Fábrica de Braço de Prata. O horário de funcionamento será de quarta a sábado, das 20h às 2h, e domingos, das 16h às 22h. Para além das livrarias, há concertos, filmes, debates, lançamento de livros, representações teatrais, exposições. http://www.bracodeprata.org/
No dia 28 de Setembro, das 18h às 2h, irá haver no espaço ao ar livre, uma mostra e venda ao público de artesanato, música, livros, roupa, acessórios, e muito mais."

Pois é, a Crafts & Design faz um ano!

Um ano de empenho, entusiasmo e persistência da parte da Florbela, da Luísa e da Mafalda - as Arquitexturas, responsáveis pela organização deste evento.

Foram elas que tiveram a ideia de fazer uma exposição mensal num dos mais bonitos jardins de Lisboa, aliando a divulgação do trabalho de diversos criadores de todo o país à animação de um belíssimo espaço da capital.

E são elas que lá estão, faça chuva ou faça sol, procurando manter a qualidade do evento, o que muitas vezes se torna bastante ingrato.

Parabéns e obrigada às três!

Embora eu nunca tenha participado nesta feira, aqui ficam as infos referentes à 8ª edição da Feira da Ladra Alternativa, que todos me dizem ser muito boa. Mais uma sugestão para o último fim-de-semana do mês de Julho, para quem estiver por Lisboa.

"A associação " Aprender África" é a convidada desta edição e tem, entre outros projectos, a implementação de uma biblioteca dirigida essencialmente ao público jovem na cidade de Nacala no norte de Moçambique. Quem quiser contribuir para esta iniciativa, basta levar para o evento livros usados, novos, antigos, recentes, ... assim ajuda e renova as prateleiras lá de casa!!!!

Feira da Serra - S. Brás de Alportel - 27/29 Julho

Antes de mais, as minhas desculpas por andar tão desaparecida. Mas, devo dizer que é por várias boas causas.
Por um lado, tenho andado a dedicar-me de alma e coração à preparação da Feira da Serra de São Brás de Alportel (que espero que visitem!). Terá lugar no fim-de-semana de 27, 28 e 29 de Julho. Poderão assistir a concertos, provar a gastronomia local, conhecer o artesanato da serra ou o chamado artesanato urbano que se faz pelo Algarve, aprender a montar a cavalo ou conhecer o processo da transformação da cortiça.

Por outro lado, estou já a desenhar e a fazer as primeiras peças de Inverno. Desta vez pretendo afastar-me um pouco da bijuteria e das bolsas, explorando formas novas e mais complexas em peças de vestuário, por exemplo.

Por tudo isto, a internet tem ficado bastante para trás. Mas, prometo actualizar as fotografias do flickr, os blogs, a minha nova página e avançar com as vendas no etsy assim que tiver um pouco de disponibilidade.

Entretanto, uma novidade para quem procura lãs para feltrar peças pequenas: agora tenho sacos com sortidos de cores. Passem pela loja online!

Hi and sorry I haven't posted anything for such a long time. But there are several good reasons for that.

First of all, I have been dedicating myself entirely to the preparation of my next market: Feira da Serra de São Brás de Alportel. It'll happen at S. Brás, Algarve, on the 27th, 28th and 29th of July. Come and visit us and you can get to know portuguese music, try local food, buy handcraft, learn about local traditions or about the cork process (one of the major industries of the region).

I'm also very busy with the new work for next Winter. So, I don't have much time for internet. Nevertheless, I promiss new stuff on flickr, on the blogs, on my new site and really to lauch the sales at etsy, as soon as possible.

11ª edição da "Crafts & Design" no Jardim da Estrela

"Verão Quente" é o tema da 11ª edição da Crafts & Design no Jardim da Estrela, dias 1 e 29 de Julho , das 9h00 às 19h00. Nesta edição celebraremos a chegada do Verão com o Joana Grupo de Teatro, (1 de Julho) e com animação de rua por duas personagens muito caricatas (29 de Julho).

"Hot Summer" is the moto for the 11th edition of Crafts & Design at Jardim da Estrela, 1st and 29 of July, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
